The History of Photography
Art photography has exploded in popularity over the course of the 20th century, thanks to many technical innovations. The invention of the portable camera by Kodak at the end of the nineteenth century, that of the Leica at the beginning of the twentieth century and the advent of digital technology changed the practices of artistic photography. Big names in art photography have helped shape this new artistic discipline: Robert Doisneau is one of the most famous French photographers, thanks to his documentary photography work and his many black and white photographs of Parisian streets after the war. The photographer Bruce Weber when he revolutionized fashion photography. Raymond Depardon, Walker Evans and Robert Mapplethorpe are other important names in contemporary photography. The work of these pioneers has greatly influenced the new generation of photographic artists who perpetuate the legacy of their predecessors while bringing a new and fresh dimension to art photography, made possible thanks to the revolution of digital photography.
